Memorial Day Hours:

The Kaplan Center will be closed Monday, May 29th in observance of Memorial Day. We will resume regular summer hours on Tuesday, May 30th.

Aquatics

The Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness Natatorium is a multi-use facility that is used for recreation swim, intramural sports, club sports, academic classes, kayak roll classes, and instructional swim lessons at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The facility offers:

  • A competitive swim pool that can be set up in 25 yards or 25 meters
  • An activity pool with a vortex, zero depth entry point, basketball hoop, and shallow wading area
  • Classroom for lifeguarding classes, CPR classes, birthday parties, and other events
  • Sun deck with lounge chairs and tables
  • Co-ed sauna
  • ADA compliant pool lift
  • Men’s, women’s and unisex locker rooms
  • Family Recreation offered every weekend beginning at 5:00pm on Fridays

Pool Schedule


Open Swim will be available during all hours of operation. We are committed to providing a minimum of 2 lanes for lap swimming during open hours of operation. Please review the calendar below to see if any reservations are scheduled in the facility.

Facility Rentals


The Natatorium is available for reservations. Birthday party rentals are available for the activity pool, sun deck, and/or classroom.

Birthday Party Details

  • One-hour swimming session
  • 45-minutes on the sundeck or in the classroom for presents and/or food.
  • Parties are available on Saturday and Sundays
    • 12:00pm – 1:30pm
    • 5:00pm – 6:30pm
  • Prices are $200 for UNCG affiliates and $250 for nonmembers
  • Parties are limited to a maximum of 15 children
  • Parties are not guaranteed to be private (The Natatorium will remain open for regular swim sessions.)

Programs and Classes


The UNCG Recreation and Wellness Department offer American Red Cross classes taught by certified instructors and utilize the American Red Cross program for courses, such as Lifeguarding and CPR/AED and First Aid classes. We also offer swim lessons of all age groups, from your child gaining valuable experience in the water for the first time to an adult wanting to improve swimming skills.

Swim Lessons

The Learn to Swim program will begin in the Spring Semester with weekday and weekend group sessions. These lessons will be taught by experienced instructors with a 1:6 instructor to student ratio. Group lesson registration and payments should be made in the Kaplan Center Administrative Office.

We are offering private lessons are 1:1 instructor to student. All individuals who are interested in receiving swim lessons must complete a Swim Lesson Interest Form. After filling out the interest form and payments are received, you will be contacted by a swim instructor in regards to setting up your private lessons. Our instructors will work with you the first day to determine what level you will start at.

All of the levels are progressive and build off the previous level.

Youth Swim Lessons (ages 5-12 years) – Private Lessons Only

  • Introduction: Learn basic aquatics safety and survival skill to increase comfort level in and around the water.
  • Basics: Familiarizing students in the water through instruction of strokes and kicks.
  • Stroke Development: Combining movements to improve and develop skill level.
  • Refinement: Further instruction to improve technical aspects of strokes.
  • Fitness: Conditioning strokes to be competitive by improving efficiency in the water.

Adult Swim Lessons (12 and older) – Private & Group Lessons

  • Beginner: For adults who have little or no experience swimming and want to get comfortable in the water by learning fundamental skills as well as water safety.
  • Intermediate: Skill and stroke development who want to work on being more efficient in the water by working on technique.
  • Advanced: Fitness workouts to improve endurance.

Registration for group lessons will close one week before each session and payments can be made at the Kaplan Center Administrative Office.

Lifeguard Courses

All courses include lectures, videos, demonstrations, practice and testing skill scenarios, with a final written exam. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be given certification cards that are valid for two years.

Course Information

Prerequisites: Must be 15 years old on or before the last scheduled class session.

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Must demonstrate the ability to swim front crawl and breaststroke. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass both the Section 1 – CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2-Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with a minimum of 80 percent.
