The Department of Recreation & Wellness is happy to welcome Davis Preston, our new Outdoor Adventures Graduate Assistant. Davis joins us after completing his undergraduate degree at Eastern Kentucky University and is pursuing a Masters Degree in Community and Therapeutic Recreation. I had a chance to chat with Davis this morning and got to know him a bit better.

When looking at graduate opportunities, Davis was not only drawn to our amazing facilities, but also the chance to learn from veteran staff. “Just looking at the track record of both Alex Hauer (Outdoor Adventures Coordinator) and Mike Ackerman (Associate Director), I figured I’d come here and immediately start learning on how to run a good program. I love the field of campus recreation so I’d love to keep moving up the chain and hopefully be an assistant director of an outdoor program one day.” Davis brings a strong set of skills and experiences that will only enhance the OA program. “Climbing is my passion. I love sharing that with other people and also pushing myself to my personal limits. I look forward to picking up more water sports.” He shared that he has not yet had the pleasure of climbing at Pilot Mountain so if you are planning a trip, give Davis a shout so he can join the fun.

Turning our focus to the upcoming semester, I was curious to know which trip on our fall schedule he was most looking forward to. “That would have to be the Fall Break Sea Kayaking Trip. It just sounds like a ton of fun.” Not everyone may feel confident about going on a trip. Our trips are open to indviduals of all skill/experience level. “Trips are a great way of getting out, meeting new people, trying something new, and pushing yourself beyond the limit you thought you had.”

So stop by Outdoor Adventures, located on the lower level of the Kaplan Center, and welcome Davis to UNCG and when you are here, try out our indoor climbing wall or check out our fall trip schedule (registration begins on the first day of classes.).
