Piney Lake, a part of UNC Greensboro since 1956, encompasses 40+ acres of beautiful park-like property situated eight miles south of campus near the community of Pleasant Garden. Piney Lake is the perfect place to unplug, recharge, and get in touch with nature. Whether you are coming to sit on the lakeshore to read a good book or trying out Stand Up Paddleboarding for the first time, Piney Lake has something for everyone!

Spring Opening Festival Shuttle Information

  • Shuttles operate every day Piney Lake is open during the Fall and Spring semester. Shuttle not available during the summer.
  • Pick up location: EUC Transportation Circle – look for the shuttle sign!
  • Departure times: 10:45AM, 11:30AM, 11:45AM, 12:30PM, 12:45PM, 1:30PM, 1:45PM, 2:30PM, 2:45PM, 3:30PM, 3:45PM, 4:30PM, 4:45PM.
  • Return shuttles from Piney Lake to campus: 12:00PM, 12:15PM, 1:00PM, 1:15PM, 2:00PM, 2:15PM, 3:00PM, 3:15PM, 4:00PM, 4:15PM, 5, 5:15, 5:30, 5:45, 6:15.
  • 14 riders per shuttle.
  • Spartan ID required for all passengers.
  • Shuttle is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Shuttle is FREE!
  • Pets are not permitted on the shuttle.

Piney Lake Visitor Policies

The following policies are to be adhered to by staff and visitors of Piney Lake. This list is not all inclusive and it is the discretion of the Piney Lake staff to determine the best course of action or decision for situations or items not listed below.

Access Policies
  • Piney Lake is available at no additional cost to all UNCG students paying the student fee and all Kaplan Center Members.
  • Eligible student and Kaplan Center members are permitted up to four (4) guests per visit.
  • Guests must be accompanied by a sponsoring UNCG member, bring a photo ID, and sign a waiver upon entry.
  • Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.
  • All waivers for minors MUST be signed by parent or legal guardian. Piney Lake Guest Waiver
General Visitor Policies
  • All vehicles must be parked in the gravel parking lot. No cars, including staff, are permitted elsewhere.
  • Leashed dogs are welcome. Please clean up after your dog.
  • No glass containers.
  • No use of alcohol or other drugs.
  • No smoking (or vaping) or use of any tobacco products.
  • No guns, knives, or weapons of any kind.
  • Use of lodges, challenge courses, and other restricted areas of the property is prohibited.
  • Please respect the private residence on the property.
  • No explicit or offensive language or behavior.
  • Please respect the environment.
  • Please respect other visitors and their experience.
  • Please respect all equipment made available to you. Visitors are responsible for damage and repair costs associated with reckless or negligent use of equipment.
  • Fishing is catch and release only.
  • No fishing near swim area.
  • No motorized watercraft allowed.
  • Personal non-motorized watercraft is permitted (kayaks, canoes, etc.), but must be approved by staff.
  • Obey all posted swimming, watercraft, and other posted guidelines.
  • Please notify staff immediately if you notice any safety concerns or other issues during your visit.
  • Staff reserve the right to close property at any time due to weather or other factors they deem necessary to ensure the safety of the property and our guests
Grill Usage
  • Charcoal grills are provided on a first come, first served basis. No personal grills or stoves are permitted.
  • Check the surrounding area for flammable debris before use.
  • Grill must be supervised at all times by the user.
  • Users must clean the grill after each use.
  • Do not place HOT ashes or coals in the trash can.
  • Please be courteous with your time if others are waiting to use the grill

Watercraft
  • Lifeguard must be on duty to use watercraft.
  • Life jackets must be properly fitted and worn while on the water.
  • Participants under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Weight and capacity limits of all watercraft must be followed.
  • Standing in canoes, kayaks, or paddle boats is not permitted.
  • No horseplay, rocking, or intentional flipping of watercraft.
  • No watercraft permitted in swimming area.
  • Use of the pier in the middle of the lake is strictly prohibited.
  • Please be courteous with your time if others are waiting to use watercraft.
  • Staff reserve the right to limit access to the water at any time.
Waterfront
  • Swimming is available May through September, weather permitting.
  • Swimming permitted only when a lifeguard is on duty and when weather permits.
  • Participants must obey lifeguard instructions.
  • Please keep conversations with lifeguards on stand to a minimum.
  • Swimming allowed only in designated swim area.
  • Participants under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
  • Swim attire must cover all private areas and be swim appropriate; lifeguards may use their discretion as to what is appropriate and inappropriate swim attire. Swim diapers required for all children not toilet trained.
  • Life jackets and other floatation devices must be Coast Guard approved. Life jackets are available upon request.
  • Inflatables and other swim equipment must be approved by a lifeguard before use.
  • No running or diving head first into shallow water.
  • No watercraft permitted in swimming area.
  • No fishing in swimming area.
  • Horseplay not allowed.
  • No food or drink permitted in water.
Water Inflatables
  • All Inflatables:
    • Participants under the age of 12 years must be accompanied by an adult. No one under the age of 5 permitted.
    • Participants must swim to inflatables. No boarding from watercraft.
    • Do not swim under inflatables.
    • Please be courteous with your time if others are waiting.
    • No pushing people off inflatables or rough-housing.
    • Staff reserve the right to limit access at any time.
  • Tower:
    • Personal Flotation Device (PFD) REQUIRED at all times.
    • No more than (6) people on the tower at a time.
    • No more than (2) people on the slide at a time.
    • No more than (2) people may jump off the ledge at a time. Water below the jump area must be cleared of people before jumping.
    • No more than (1) person on the climbing feature at a time.
    • All sliding and jumps into the water must be done feet first.
  • Aquatrack:
    • Personal Flotation Device (PFD) REQUIRED at all times.
    • No more than (2) people on each section of the aquatrack at a time.
    • Each end (platform and slide) should be clear at all times.
  • Trampoline:
    • Personal Flotation Device (PFD) RECOMMENDED.
    • No more than (3) jumpers on the trampoline at a time.
    • No more than (2) people on the slide at a time. 
    • No flipping or jumping off of the trampoline.
    • The swim platform and slide are the only approved exit points.
    • Sliding must be done feet first.

The Hilltop Lodge, Lakeside Lodge, and waterfront are perfect gathering spaces for meetings, trainings, retreats, and much more! With views of the lake and the surrounding wooded areas, Piney Lake provides a nice escape for your group outings.
