A.L.O.H.A.

Spring Break is upon us! In an effort to promote a safe and healthy Spring Break, the Department of Recreation & Wellness set out to offer the UNCG community A Lively Opportunity to Happily Abstain. In recognition of “Safe Spring Break Alternative Week,” we hosted our very first luau which consisted of a Hawaiian-themed talent show entitled A.L.O.H.A. (A Lively Opportunity to Happily Abstain). Playing off of the popular Hawaiian greeting, ALOHA, our fellow Spartans took the stage to show off their talent to the UNC-Greensboro community. The goal of A.L.O.H.A. was for students to identify healthy and safe alternatives to fun through their chosen talent.

The showcase encompassed a variety of acts with everything from beatboxing, ukulele and guitar performances to singing, dancing and spoken word. Spartan attendees also enjoyed “mocktails” (non-alcoholic beverages) sponsored by the University Speaking Center. A team of speaking center volunteers created a station where persons could enjoy Hawaiian drinks flavored with Pop-Rocks candy, fresh fruit, flavored juice and soda. They were delicious! In addition to their tasty drinks, the Speaking Center also brought along an activity that displayed what students thought were important topics to speak up on. For example, some sheets read as follows: “Speak up and: stand out”, “Speak up and: be unashamed”, “Speak up and: be yourself” and the list continues. Student Government Association (SGA) also joined in on the festivities! As a part of “Mental Health Awareness Week”, SGA representatives asked students to write mental health stigmas on a board so that the board could be destroyed. SGA representatives were also generous enough to give away t-shirts to the first few students who followed their social media outlet. The Department of Recreation and Wellness additionally partnered with “Spartan Choices”- a program that promotes decreasing alcohol usage among UNCG students by making not drinking alcohol an appealing and visible choice on and around campus. Two representatives from “Spartan Choices” provided amazing giveaways that were raffled off to students at the end of the night. Attendees enjoyed a fun and interactive DJ that kept the showcase lively and upbeat. Additionally, cookies, fruit, and a cake with the acronym “A.L.O.H.A”. written on it served as catered treats.

The atmosphere in Cone Ballroom resembled a relaxing getaway to Hawaii, with leis, colorful attire, and grass skirts worn proudly by students, attendees, and SPARTA volunteers. By the end of the showcase, students thoroughly enjoyed dancing and mingling amidst one another. This social event displayed that college students do not have to partake alcohol and other drugs in order to make memories and have a great time!
