Program / Classes

Registration for all classes close a week before the first day of class at the Admin Office. All classes are held in the Wet Classroom – Room 126A.

Lifeguard Courses

All courses include lectures, videos, demonstrations, practice and testing skill scenarios, with a final written exam. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be given certification cards that are valid for two years.

Course Information

Prerequisites: Must be 15 years old on or before the last scheduled class session.

  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Must demonstrate the ability to swim front crawl and breaststroke. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Certification Requirements

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required final rescue skill scenarios.
  • Pass both the Section 1 – CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2-Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with a minimum of 80 percent.

CPR Classes

We offer Adult and Pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. These classes are taught in a blended learning format, portions of the course will be online through the American Red Cross and the last portion will be a hands on skills test in a classroom setting at the Kaplan Center.

If you’re taking a class that requires CPR certification, SIGN UP EARLY! Classes fill up quickly.

Birthday Parties

Birthday Party Details

  • One-hour swimming session
  • 45-minutes on the sundeck or in the classroom for presents and/or food.
  • Parties are available on Saturday and Sundays
    • 12:00pm – 1:30pm
    • 5:00pm – 6:30pm
  • Prices are $200 for UNCG affiliates and $250 for nonmembers
  • Parties are limited to a maximum of 15 children
  • Parties are not guaranteed to be private (The Natatorium will remain open for regular swim sessions.)
